Kit Policy

Principles

For the purpose of this document, “kit” means specialist clothing and/or equipment which is worn or used during fencing. This includes: masks, swords, jackets, plastrons, chest protectors, breeches, wires and gloves.

Unfortunately it is not possible for LFC to provide all of the kit needed by all of its members.

The use of kit which is safe and fit for purpose is essential for the safe running of LFC.

Members who are new to LFC are not expected to have their own kit with the exception of suitable footwear and suitable clothing to be worn under fencing kit.

LFC recognises that the purchase of kit is a significant commitment, but believes that the longer a member is involved in fencing, the more reasonable it is to expect them to provide their own kit.

If members are found to be using kit (including their own kit) which does not meet required safety levels they will be required to stop fencing.

LFC will provide advice to members on what is appropriate and safe kit.

All members will be covered by this policy.

Policy

LFC will buy or hire or borrow kit of an appropriate quality and standard to make the policy workable.

Priority Groups

Group 1) LFC will provide kit for all new members who are enrolled on a beginners’ course. This group has first priority on kit.

Group 2) LFC will continue to provide kit for beginners who progress to being intermediate fencers for a period of three months after they complete their beginners’ course. This group has second priority on kit.

Other members may make use of LFC kit if it is not being used by the two priority groups.

Access to kit owned by LFC will therefore be allocated in the following priority order:

  1. Beginners (priority group)
  2. Intermediate fencers up to three months after passing a beginners’ course (priority group)
  3. Other members (if kit is still available)

Managing the allocation of kit at LFC sessions

Organisers and coaches must bear in mind the above when organising sessions to ensure that kit is allocated in priority order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the policy for and why does LFC need it?

The policy sets out LFC’s approach to kit safety, and to explain who gets priority in using LFC kit. Prioritisation is necessary because LFC does not have the finances it needs to provide all members with all of the kit they need to fence safely.

Why is it being introduced now?

Lewes Fencing Club was formed in September 2011. As we become aware of issues in running this new club, it is necessary for the Committee to introduce relevant policies.

Why do beginners and intermediate fencers get priority?

As a community club we aim to encourage new people to try fencing. We recognise that the cost of kit could be a barrier to people trying the sport.  However, given the limited resources of LFC, and the growing membership, it is reasonable to expect that members who are no longer beginners should begin to take responsibility for having their own kit.

Members who are progressing from the beginners’ classes will be given three months to buy their kit, in recognition that it will be helpful to spread the cost.

How do I buy my own kit?

LFC can advise members on the necessary kit and recommended fencing retailers.

LFC has been able to secure a discount for members through the specialist retailer Allstar (http://www.allstar-fencing.co.uk/home.asp).  Please ask a member of the committee how to access this discount.
