Questions and Answers

Thinking of trying fencing? These are the questions we are asked most often.

Do I need any experience?

No. Previous fencing experience is not essential. Our friendly team of qualified coaches will take you through everything from the start.

How old do you have to be?

We take fencers from age 6. For 6 to 13 year olds we offer taster sessions. For ages 14 and over, including adults, we offer a six-week beginners course.

How much does it cost to try?

  • Taster session (ages 6 to 13): £12, in the Sunday 9am to 10am session.
  • Beginners course (ages 14+ and adults): £70 for 6 weeks.
  • Small group course (ages 14+ and adults): £60 for 3 weeks, half an hour each week, a maximum of 2 people, on a Wednesday or Sunday to suit.

After that, see Our Fees.

What should I wear?

Indoor trainers (not black soles, as they mark the floor), long trousers such as tracksuit bottoms, and a T-shirt. Shorts are not acceptable, as legs must be completely covered.

Do I need my own kit?

No. Our prices include the use of fencing clothing, weapons and equipment. Minis use a plastic weapon and will move to metal as they improve.

Will it hurt?

Not much. You wear a mask, a jacket, an under-jacket protector called a plastron, a glove and breeches, and the equipment we supply conforms to the required standards. You will feel a hit, and now and then one may leave a small bruise, but most feel like a firm tap.

Is it safe?

Safety comes first at every session. Your coach will show you how to handle a weapon safely before you fence anyone. You can read our Equipment Standards & Safety Conduct.

Do I need to be fit?

No. Fencing is a great sport to start at any age. It improves your flexibility, co-ordination, balance and all-round fitness as you go.

What is épée?

It is one of the three fencing weapons, and our main weapon. We teach sabre as well. Read our short guide to épée and sabre.

When and where do you meet?

Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings at Lewes Leisure Centre, Mountfield Road, Lewes, BN7 2XG. See times, halls and a map on Visit Us.

Can I just turn up?

You are more than welcome to pop in and see us on a Sunday morning or Wednesday evening. To fence, please sign up first so that we can contact you with details.

Do I need to join British Fencing?
