  • Welcome to Lewes Fencing Club’s Winter term newsletter 2020

    It’s Chrisssstmaaaas, almost!
    Hi All
    Quick reminder
It is our last session on 13th December before Christmas.

    A recap of the year
Well, what a year!, there was a big change for the club, one which meant that with sadness we said goodbye to Gerad, his job and commitments elsewhere meant he had to give up his head coach position with us.  Thankfully Lewis McInley was looking to move to the area and fitted our needs perfectly, providing much appreciated support as we reopened. .  We had planned a nice smooth handover but COVID put a stop to that and added in numerous restrictions which we thank everyone for complying with.  Hopefully Gerad will be back to visits at some point so we can say goodbye properly.

We would have been having our Christmas Social this weekend. Again COVID has put a stop to that, but hopefully we can make up for it at the Summer social. It will also be the clubs 10th birthday next year so much to celebrate.

We have to say thank you to you guys, when we were able to fence you came out in force. Having an average of 21 people each week at this point is truly amazing.  We hope that with all the work the BFA* is doing behind the scenes we will be fully open again soon.  But trust us when we say we will be open as much as the Government, BFA and Lewes Leisure Centre will let us.

Della, Gordon, Lewis and Thor all took a Level 2 Epee Referee course this year, they all passed the theory section and now just have to do a practical at a competition next year, that could be tricky at least in the 1st half.  But it’s good to see that people are looking to broaden their
fencing knowledge. Watch out for us as we could be coming down hard on the rule infringements :-).

    Next Term
Currently we are due back on the 10th of January. Whilst we hope things will change for the better between now and then we can’t be sure, so for now we will continue with the U18’s but if something changes we will of course open it up.

For those coming this Sunday (13th Dec) we look forward to seeing you, and if not we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

    Best wishes
Anita, Claire, Della, Gordon, Lewis and Simon.

    * People often ask why they have to be members of the BFA apart from the insurance element it is at times like these they help the grassroot sports.  We would not be fencing now without their lobbying of the Government. So I do urge you to check if your BFA membership expired, if it has renew it and let the club know your new end date.

Normal COVID housekeeping notes we would like you to review. Kit, please make sure you know where your kit is and keep it under your control, if your kit accidentally or purposefully gets used by someone else make sure they/you sanitize it before re use. 2m rule, even when we are in our piste bubbles please make sure you keep two meters apart unless you are fencing.  This has been re-iterated by the British Fencing Association as one of the reasons we have been allowed to open when other sports have not and they are keen to make sure we adhere to it. Mixing between bubbles, please do not do this, even if you are able to mix outside of the club. Please try to fence everyone on your piste during a session, if you need to leave early then please arrange it with other members of your piste. If you are under 18 please make sure one of the committee knows you have left.

You can still borrow kit if you need to or need to exchange something you have already borrowed, please get in contact with us to make sure we have it with us on Sunday.

Remember you will need to do the following (only 2 & 3 if you have already done 1 previously).  Booking will close on Friday so that we have time to allocate you to a piste.

    1. Completed a membership form: https://www.lewesfencingclub.org.uk/membership-form/
    2. Booked in specifically for this weekend: https://www.lewesfencingclub.org.uk/booking/
    3. Paid your fees for this weekend: https://www.lewesfencingclub.org.uk/purchase/

  • 3rd December 2020 Latest Club update COVID-

We are back this Sunday for the under 18’s

Hi All Gordon and Lewis have just got off a call with British Fencing, we are pleased to say we can open for fencing for U18’s as of this Sunday :-).

    Under 18s*
Classes will remain much like previously, with the exception that your allotted coach can only give lessons and cannot actually fence you.  Whilst we could have a group of up to 15 fencers we will work it out so that the level of fencing can be maintained for enjoyment and safety.

If you intend to fence on Sunday please book in as early as possible so we know the numbers.

    18* and over
We have taken a view that at this point we are not opening for those who are 18 and over. Whilst there is scope for footwork/drill type classes for this group of fencers there is no actual fencing allowed.  BFA are pushing the Government hard on this due to all the precautions that we have already put in place. Hopefully this will change in the coming weeks, and or we move to Tier 1 at which point we can open for fencing to all.  Please do let us know if you would like footwork/drill class so if the worst comes to the worst we know what numbers we have.

    Tiers
We can accept under 18 fencers from all Tiers, however, if you are coming from a Tier 3 location could you email the club as we need to do a risk assessment on a case by case basis.

*We can also change the definition of an Under 18, this is a person who is under 18 or turns 18 in the current school year.

Can you please check if your BFA membership has not expired, if it has could you please renew and let the club know your new end date.

Just some housekeeping notes we would like you to review.

    • Kit, please make sure you know where your kit is and keep it under your control, if your kit accidentally or purposefully gets used by someone else make sure they/you sanitize it before re use.
    • 2m rule, even when we are in our piste bubbles please make sure you keep two meters apart unless you are fencing.  This has been re-iterated by the British Fencing Association as one of the reasons we have been allowed to open when other sports have not and they are keen to make sure we adhere to it.
    • Mixing between bubbles, please do not do this, even if you are able to mix outside of the club.
    • Please try to fence everyone on your piste during a session, if you need to leave early then please arrange it with other members of your piste. If you are under 18 please make sure one of the committee knows you have left.

We are still only accepting those who fence electric regularly, that is Della & Gordon’s group and up. We will hopefully be able to change this in the coming weeks. If you have a child in Simon’s (beginners) group please let us know if you intend to come back so that we can gauge interest.

  • Welcome to Lewes Fencing Club’s Spring term newsletter 2020

We hope you had a great Christmas with a point?

We hope you had a great Christmas with lots of pointy related presents, we look forward to seeing you in the new year with all your shiny kit.

We are now also able to offer payment by bank transfer, our details are as follows:-
    Name: Lewes Fencing Club
    Sort Code: 60-13-09
    Account Number: 41630378

Please add your (child’s) name as a reference and if you could also email us to confirm it would help us reconcile your payment.

    Kit
Our kit is starting to show its age and Simon is doing an excellent job at keeping it running, here is what you can do to help:-

    • Do not let body clips fly back into the spools when you un-clip.
    • Please do not twirl body wires around in between bouts, it weakens them..
    • Don’t walk over wires at the back of pistes, tripping on the spool wires can break the clips that attach them to jackets and also rip the jackets.
    • Check your points have both screws in them.
    • If you find any kit that is unusable please report it rather than putting it back into the bags.

*** It would also be a great help if when taking your kit off you put in back in the relevant place, and if you have finished fencing or are just waiting to pick up your kids helping us put away the kit means we all have more time to fence and coach.

    Hoodies and Other Club Kit
A reminder about hoodies and other club branded kit can be purchased from here.

    Welfare Courses
Are you looking to get involved with fencing some more?  The South East Region is organising Welfare courses in the new year.  There are 3 courses (all required for full Wefare Officer status) being run on the 23rd February 2020, spaces are running out so if you would like to go on one or all of them please register ASAP. NB. You will need at least a support level BFA membership. Please see Gordon for more information, or email jclayton@kentfencing.org.uk

British Fencing Association (BFA) membership – reminder.
The BFA has reviewed their membership scheme for Clubs and individual fencers.
